On 9 June 1915, Lance Corporal James Murray, of Inchure, Rogart died of wounds in France. He was 28.
Born in Achillie, Rogart on 31 December 1886, James was the son of Alexander Murray and Sarah née Matheson of Achillie. In 1911 he was employed as a joiner. He enlisted in the 1/5th (Sutherland and Caithness) Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders, Territorial Force and his regimental number was 375.
His death was announced in the
Northern Times: ‘’Yet another name has been added to the Roll of those who
have gone from the parish to the front and died for their King and Country.
Word had been received that Private James Murray, Inchure Rogart has died in
hospital from wounds received. The sympathy of the community goes out to the
widowed mother and family.’’
James Murray is remembered with honour on the Le Touret Memorial, France, (Part 6, Stone 38E), Rogart war memorial and also on the family headstone in St. Callan’s Churchyard, Rogart.
