On 19 October 1918 Private John Stewart died from Influenza. He was aged 19.
John, was born in 1899 at Scourie, the son of Angus Stewart (a tinsmith) and Mary née Stewart. He was of travelling folk and had enlisted in the Seaforth Highlanders at the age of 15, although he claimed to be 18. At the time of his enlistment his home was Culdrain, Rogart.
He joined the 12th Bn. Machine Gun Corps (Infantry) and his Service Number was 143135.
John’s siblings included Peter, b 1908, who fought in the Second World War, Susan b. 1902 (who married Alexander Williamson), Mary b. 1909 and Annie b. 1910.
John is buried at Houchin British Cemetery, Plot III, A21. John Stewart is memorialised on the Rogart war memorial.
