On 26 December 1916, Private Robert MacKay died of tetanus at Rouen, France. He was aged 25. Robert was the son of Donald MacKay (a shepherd) and Catherine née Grant of Woodside, Rovie, Rogart. His sister, Kitty, married Colin Macdonald Murray MM.
Robert had enlisted in Thurso with 2nd Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders and his regimental number was S/40007. He was awarded the War Medal and Victory Medal.
Robert was buried at St Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, France and commemorated on Rogart’s war memorial. His loss is also recorded in the Clan Mackay Society War Memorial Roll of Honour.
